Band/artist history

Although I am now known as a composer of music that is very much classical in style, I certainly did not start my musical career in that vein. A self taught musician, I started off as a pop keyboardist & vocalist in the mid eighties. Inspired by the likes of the English keyboard virtuosos and singer songwriters Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby and Nik Kershaw, I released my first two solo albums in 1985. Make it Happen reached number one on the Western Australian Independent Charts and the follow up album Deja Vu made it to number three.

In 1986 I formed an original band called De Vie. The band went on to become one of the foremost original acts in Perth and recorded an album entitled Spice of Life. Despite their potential, De Vie was short lived. The following year I withdrew from the music scene to focus on other interests after recording Dress to Impress, my third solo album.

It was not until 1992 that I re-emerged with A Chance to Dream, an album I produced and engineered in my own studio. Later that year I moved to Melbourne where I continued to hone my skills as a songwriter. I wrote a few jingles and recorded with some local musicians. 

I returned to Perth in 1996 with the desire to expand my musical horizons. Inspired by the World Music phenomenon, I set about recording Tears of the Moon, which was released in May 1997. The instrumental album represented a significant departure from my previous writing styles.

After a 6 year hiatus and yearning to get back into writing music, I wrote and recorded Eclipse in 2003. It was a somewhat eclectic fusion of New Age, contemporary classical, Celtic and even jazz styles. Eclipse was an attempt to step out of my comfort zone and take my writing to the next level. Despite some favourable reviews, Eclipse failed to sit comfortably in any one genre and as adventurous as it was, it did not strike the same chord with listeners as Tears of the Moon. It was, however, a very important step in my musical development and I learnt a lot from the experience.

In March 2004 I set about writing material for Tales of a Summer Past. Released in February 2005, it is an album that is firmly in the realm of New Age classical/crossover classical music. Using only orchestral sounds I aimed to re-captured the energy of Tears of the Moon yet produce an album that explored the neo-classical far more deftly than did Eclipse.

Not one to sit still for too long, I was driven to produce yet another album and commenced writing material for Candescence in July 2005. The album was completed in April 2006. Candescence is essentially a romantic classical album with a mix of solo, chamber and fully orchestrated tracks - mostly the latter. The final track on Candescence, "The Fallen" won the Broadjam soundtrack contest (December 2006) and earnt me a top 5 finish in the classical music category of the 2006 Musicoz Awards. 

I am now pretty much retired with no plans to compose or record anytime soon. I have embarked on other paths in my life!

Have you performed in front of an audience?

I am a studio musician. I am not performing live at present.

Your musical influences

There are so many. I am a sponge and soak up as much as I can from all genres.  Some critics have commented that my most recent work has nuances of Beethoven and Mozart (and no, I am not daring to compare myself to such luminaries)

What equipment do you use?

I am one of growing band of composers who create orchestral music using digitally sampled sound libraries  namely East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra sample library (gold edition) and the East West PMI Bösendorfer 290 piano library.
