Its been a long time since I heard rock and roll that I liked. This is a hit! Those were the words of Grammy-nominated artist/producer/songwriter Wyclef Jean when he heard the music of Next Big Thing. This New York/New Jersey band with the tongue-in-cheek moniker has forged a sound that is modern, yet fully aware of its roots. From the raw, punky energy of In the Stars, to the Britpop-inspired title track, Radiate, to the sweet harmonies and vocal interplay of Ferris Wheel, the eleven tracks of Next Big Things first full-length release, Radiate, do just that. Founded by vocalist-guitarists Shawn Moynihan and Alan Miller, and joined by drummer Lou Iacobelli and bassist-vocalist Gautam Peri, Next Big Thing combines elements of modern rock, Brit-pop, and classic rock with high-caliber songwriting skills that have been recognized four times by the Billboard National Songwriting Competition. In addition to headlining its own shows, the band has opened for rock legends Leslie West (Mountain), Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple), and Simon Kirke (Bad Company, Free). NBT was also commissioned to write the theme song for the minor-league baseball Staten Island Yankees, which is played before every home game, and was invited to perform for an audience of thousands at the opening of the teams Richmond County Bank Stadium. The band has brought their energetic and enthusiastic live show to venues such as Arlene Grocery, Le Bar Bat and the Hard Rock Café in New York City, and to Philadelphia hot spot, Abilenes. The band was also invited to perform at the 2002 International Pop Overthrow Festival with a showcase set at Luna Lounge and performed a headlining set at the Meadowlands Boardwalk Experience at Giants Stadium as part of the pre-show entertainment for Bruce Springsteen. Next Big Thing has received airplay on several stations including WPLJ-FM, Z-100, Q104.3 and the YES NETWORK in New York City as well as WDHA-FM and WHTG-FM in New Jersey. The band was also featured performing live on WABC-TV.
Band/artist history
Shawn and Alan met as teenagers in their hometown of Staten Island. They started writing songs together, mostly meandering modal pieces in the vein of Schoenberg. One day they met Lou at a bus stop, who was banging on a snare drum while shouting at passersby through a megaphone. They started a band. Unfortunately, their brand of Norwegian death metal mixed with operatic arias didn't go over well with audiences, and they soon found themselves playing for the seagulls that would circle around the island's many garbage dumps. Also they didn't have a bass player. They started playing rock music, and they finally found a guy named Mark, but then Mark moved away (we'd tell you more about Mark, but he's a super secret CIA operative, and...oops). After an exhaustive and futile search of the five boroughs of New York City, the three lads decided to walk across the Outerbridge to New Jersey, where they found a young bass player named G, who was so poor he couldn't afford any more letters in his name. G believed it was 1956 and, fearing Soviet nuclear projectiles, was hiding under a desk in an abandoned schoolhouse, which is why Shawn, Alan, and Lou didn't find him sooner. They recorded an album called Radiate, which is really good and which you should buy right now.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
NBT performs mainly in and around NYC and Philly. Special moments include shows at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York, and the "Boardwalk Experience" show at Giants Stadium as part of the Bruce Springsteen pre-show entertainment.
Your musical influences
The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Cheap Trick, U2, Foo Fighters, Everclear, Fountains of Wayne, Better Than Ezra, Tonic, Barenaked Ladies, zydeco, Kylie Minogue, Justice League, Human League, music from Indian movies (especially the synchronized dancing), and Bananarama.
What equipment do you use?
Stuff we stole from techno and electronica bands.
Anything else?
Just wanted to mention that Next Big Thing's album, "Radiate," has no negative side effects, unlike albums by Justin Timberlake, Nickelback, and Linkin Park, which we're told cause impotence.
