Story behind the song
Sharon and I took a two-day "Cruise to Nowhere" out of NYC a number of years ago. Little did we know that it was, what they call, a Booze Cruise. Once the ship hit international waters, booze was sold "duty free." Pub crawling is also known as going on a Booze Cruise...fascinating info online. I've had the first line of the chorus, "Booooze Crooooze (sung like a ship's horn)..." stuck in my head for over a year. The song took off by connecting a few key phrases ("salt-rimmed sea" and "living duty-free") and by tossing "Drunken Sailor" in as a bridge in unison. Fortunately, I haven't been around "puking mates" since college days...
Lyrics
BOOZE CRUISE By Dwight Lakey Intro Verse 1 My life had been a Booze Cruise; a voyage without goal Destination: “Nowhere;” grounded on a shoal I sailed the good ship “Party;” I was hearty I was hale I only had one duty; that was staying out of jail! Chorus Booze Cruise I sailed a salt-rimmed sea Booze Cruise I sought booty, “duty-free” Verse 2 In port me mates and I did cruise, from pub-to-pub we’d crawl Booze-soaked, loud and rowdy, we’d stumble and we’d brawl A Big Dipper full of whiskey helped us navigate the bars Before the night was over mates were puking on all fours Chorus Bridge “What do you do with a drunken sailor Old Sea What do you do with a drunken sailor Shanty What do you do with a drunken sailor Early in the morning?” Put him in the bilge and make him drink it Put him in the bilge and make him drink it Put him in the bilge and make him drink it Early in the morning! Solo ------- Over Verse Chorus Verse 3 I had to end my Booze Cruise before it scuttled me Torpedoed by a bottle; a shipwreck undersea I’m on a different journey; I’ve found new identity Accepting what I cannot change; I seek serenity Chorus Outro Booze Cruise I learned NOTHING’S duty-free! © 2010 Dwight Lakey & Brown Barn Publishing Danville, VT & Julesburg CO; All Rights Reserved
