I came home from college on summer break
just about noon Memorial Day
walking up to mom and daddy's front door
I stopped a minute there on the porch
seeing old glory fly at half staff
reminded me of what I have
like apple pie by the slice
and my God given rights
remembering those that gave their lives
I can't keep it inside

the whole town turned out for the fourth of July
all my friends were right by my side
the place may be small but its voice is strong
a rebel yell rocked the courthouse lawn
all the flags waved the parade rolled by
and I held my head up high
it's apple pie by the slice
and Shriners on mini bikes
fireworks filling up the sky

one of the Wilson boys was home on leave
so I shook his hand and said thanks marine
'cause it's apple pie by the slice
sleeping in peace each night
knowing there's stars behind the stripes
