Story behind the song
The opening line, "My daddy was a drugstore cowboy..." has been bouncing around for months. Once I added: "Momma was a cafe queen..." the story came together quickly. Wally really DID own the Corner Drug Store on Second and Cedar Streets...
Lyrics
Cafe Cowboy by Dwight Lakey (Intro 2x) Verse 1: My daddy was a drugstore cowboy My momma was a cafe queen I was raised at this cafe counter Since I was old enough to wean Now they call me The Cafe Cowboy And you’ll never find me at a booth I sit alone on this worn out stool That I’ve been spinnin’ on since my youth Chorus: Cafe Cowboy Sneakers and blue jeans Cafe Cowboy Lookin’ for a drugstore queen Verse 2: Wally owned the Corner Drugstore Second and Cedar Streets Had a full-stocked soda counter All the fancy ice cream treats I’d flirt from a stool at that counter With the prettiest girls in town But they’ve all moved on and I’m all alone And Wally closed the drugstore down Chorus Bridge: The cafe’s mighty slow tonight; the supper crowd’s long gone I’d be gone too if I had a place to go Over there’s a gal I used to date; her face looks tired and drawn Her cheatin’ husband left; his name was Joe Verse 3: Momma brings me a pie and coffee Takes the stool right by my side Says, “Son, you’re a sad, old loner With your Daddy’s cowboy pride There’s Jolene over in the corner booth Get over there and start your life She may not be your drugstore queen But she’d make a real fine wife Chorus …Cafe Cowboy (Fade Out)
