Story behind the song
I am sure by now that we are all familiar with the tragic story of Jon Benett' Ramsey's murder. My wife and I were discussing it one afternoon and she challenged me to compose a song about this sad event. I had already been playing around with the melody and guitar pattern. I thought the song should come from the most common point of view, that is to say, the perspective of the average person who reads the paper or listens to the news . . . unconnected emotionally, however, experiencing emotional sadness. Marcie helped with the general message of the lyrics, as well as contributing some of the lines. The "Jesus Loves Me" part during the last chorus was entirely her idea. To me, it adds a beautiful and uplifting note of hopefulness to the story. I have witnessed different emotional reactions when I have performed this song. One time, at a small coffee house when Marcie and I performed the song at the end of our set, I played the last notes of the ending on my guitar. When the last note faded, the audience did not make a sound . . .complete silence. When I left the stage, I could see their tears. It was as if they could now finally grieve for this little girl. Whereas they did not know Jon Benett' personally, the song had brought them together.
