Story behind the song
Our pecussionist who has studied in Ghana, West Afica put this age old folk story to music.
Lyrics
verse one: There once was a King of the monkeys. He saw a beautiful sight. It was a golden moon shining in the pond one night. He said to himself: “Myself, I would like to have that for myself. But in order to get it, first I’m gonna need some help.” Chorus: Monkey see, monkey do, Monkey there’s gonna be trouble for you. If you follow that fool who’s the king of them all, You better watch out ‘cause you’ll have a fall. verse two: He called the other monkeys to come and lend a hand, To get the golden moon and be richest in all the land. The monkeys came from near and far and listened to his plan: “Together make a chain, joining tail to hand.” (Chorus) verse three: The first monkey held the tree. The others joined behind. They made their monkey chain, on the end the King climbed. The King reached for the moon, to be the first to touch the gold. But they all fell in the water, now the story’s told. (Chorus) verse four: Now you heard the story, I’ll tell you one more thing: Don’t be like those monkeys who followed their foolish King. If you follow a fool you are a fool, be you monkey or you man. Think for yourself first, that’s the best plan. (Chorus)
