Story behind the song
Written to the tune of an Irish slip jig, "The Humours of Whiskey" while hitchhiking across France in 1984. The subject matter of "meeting Pan" was inspired by reading a book "The Magic of Findhorn" in which there is a chapter about a fellow meeting with Pan at the Findhorn community in Scotland.
Lyrics
I was a'wandering, wandering,
I was a'wandering far away,
I was a'wandering, wandering,
Deep through the woods on a merry day...
I was a'frolicking, frolicking,
I was a'dancing beneath the woods,
I was a'frolicking, dancing and
There I saw Pan, oh how tall he stood...
What a magnificent being !
For here was the lord of the forest,
All of the birds were singing
Together as if in a chorus...
Pan is the devil, the devil,
Pan is the devil so stay away,
Pan is the devil, the devil,
Oh, that's what the Christians of old did say...
I don't believe you, believe you,
I don't believe what you've done to him,
I don't believe you, believe you,
I deem he is innocent of your sins...
He was playing his pipes and
All of the leaves were a'dancing,
His feet were hooves in the dirt,
That were always a'jumping and prancing.
Pan is the spirit of spring,
When all of the buds are unfolding
A torrent of sap that's a'rising
The power of life he is holding...
I was a'wandering, wandering,
I was a'wandering far away,
I was a'wandering, wandering,
Deep through the woods on a merry day...
I was a'frolicking, frolicking,
I was a'dancing beneath the woods,
I was a'skipping along
When I ran into Pan there beneath the woods...
He said aren't you afraid,
The church they call me the devil,
And now everyone runs away,
For they all believe I am the devil;
But I've been around a long time,
My songs have been overflowing,
For I am the sheperd of Nature,
Of all that is living and growing...
