Story behind the song
I've always been fascinated by the idea of Columbus knowing that he was near land and yet, being unable to actually sight it for a few days. This song is about that moment when, to your relief, land is spotted and you know that, at least for now, you're NOT going to drown.
Lyrics
There had been signs: many of them and we'd been seeing them for days.
A branch, floating gently on the water.
The faint calling of land birds riding on some distant wind.
And yet, as we sailed through yet another night, looking for a land that was somehow eluding us, it all seemed such a distant madness.
Straining our senses for even the smallest change
in the sounds,
in the smells of the sea,
straining our eyes to see the firefly glow of faraway fires in the night,
we lived with a great fear of death by drowning. Drowning alone and so far away from the stone palaces of Europe
in these currents so new that there had been no time to name them,
so far from the veriest edge
of our captain's maps.
But as the sun rose, we saw the land.
It seemed to be smiling gently,
like it had awaited us for centuries in that light, under that clear blue sky.
And there were beaches
and cool, dark jungles of a green like none of us had ever seen before.
And down a mountainside, we could make out a cascade, falling. Falling like a river of light.
