Little baby lying in a manger, Gift from heaven above, The word made flesh come to dwell with us And teach us all about love. And in my dream I’m there in that stable On that silent, holy night, And I kneel down before my baby Lord, The King of Love and Light, I know that every tongue shall praise you And every knee shall bow, Right now you are just a tiny little baby In the feedbox of a cow. So I join the angel chorus And proclaim the holy birth For God has come— Let the world be one— Let there be peace on earth! Then suddenly my dream changes And I’m standing on a hill With the shield and sword of a Roman soldier And it is my job to kill. In my hand I hold a hammer And with anger I drive each nail. But I look in his eyes and I realize That he forgives me still… And then I fall down before Him, Crying tears of grief and joy For the battle won by the gift that had come In the form of a baby boy. So I join a weeping chorus Of the living and the dead, At the cost of sin, And how God entered in And took our place instead… Then I awake and it’s Christmas morning-- I'm trembling in my bed.
