Contemporary band compositions, classical music arrangements, marches, jazz, symphonies, overtures. A collection from bands that I have played in throughout hi
Hello and welcome! "Symphonic Band Performances" is a compilation of recordings from several high school and college bands that I played in including the TMEA (Texas) All State Band, the TMEA Region X All Region Band, the Interlochen Arts Academy National Music Camp, the Cal Poly Tech Band, San Luis Obispo, the USAF Golden West Band, and recordings from my h.s. band, Beaumont H.S. and a few band recordings that were passed down to me. Also included are various All State groups and college and university bands. I participated and played in the large majority of these recordings. There are no professional recordings here and every recording is Public Domain. Most are available for free download. Each song has been converted from the original analog or digital source and edited with Audacity or Dak software. In the majority of these recordings, I play the tenor sax or alto sax, b flat or e flat clarinet, or directing. I was drum major for 2 years in high school, I have a BA from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where I studied music ed, composition and theory. I had about 500 more recordings I was planning to digitize and upload, but this past Nov. 20th, my home was completely destroyed by fire, and all the contents, including all my music and instruments. So, this is it. Please feel free to post a comment here or on my member page. If you like, please become a fan by clicking "I'm a fan" below.

Story behind the song
The Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47, of Dmitri Shostakovich is a symphony for orchestra composed between April and July 1937. Its premiere was on November 21, 1937, in Leningrad by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under Yevgeny Mravinsky. The work was a huge success, and is said to have received an ovation of at least 40 minutes, according to Mstislav Rostropovich. It is still one of his most popular works. With the Fifth Symphony, Shostakovich gained an unprecedented triumph, with the music appealing equally and remarkably to both the official critics and the public. The authorities found everything they had looked for restored in the symphony. The public heard it as an expression of the suffering to which it had been subjected by Stalin. The same work was essentially received two different ways. Movement IV. Finale - Allegro non troppo - This movement picks up the march music from the climax of the opening movement, at least in manner if not in specific material. A tense conclusion leads to the quieter section of the piece. This section ends and the short snare drum and timpani solo introduce a brief militaristic introduction to the finale of the movement, an extended and obsessive reiteration of the D major tonality. To fully understand the public success of the Fifth Symphony and how it resonated with audiences, musicologist Genrikh Orlov argues that the music has to be seen as an artistic portrayal of the time in which it originated. Shostakovich grew in the years preceding the symphony as both a master and a thinking artist-citizen. He did so together with his country and people, sharing their hopes, aspirations and fate, intensely scrutinizing everything going on around him. At the height of the Stalinist Terror, over half a million people were shot and another seven million despatched to the Gulag in just over a year's time. Conservative estimates place the Gulag population at between nine and 15 million. During the first performance of the symphony, people were reported to have wept during the Largo movement. The music, steeped in an atmosphere of mourning, contained echoes of the panikhida, the Russian Orthodox requiem. It also recalled a genre of Russian symphonic works written in memory of the dead, including pieces by Glazunov, Steinberg, Rimsky-Korsakov and Stravinsky. Typical of these works is the use of the tremolo in the strings as a reference to the hallowed ambience of the requiem. For an audience that had lost friends and family on a massive scale, these references were apt to evoke intense emotions. This was why the Fifth Symphony was received and cherished by the Soviet public unlike any other work as an expression of the immeasurable grief they endured during Stalin's regime.

Very intense beginning, an adventure in the making, a joyful horse back ride through a meadow, jumping logs in and out of trees, may be a chase here, something is close, climactic, synergy merging side by side, calming rest, relax for it is complete, very interesting journey, Thank you all who created such organized sound. Thank you Ivan for publishing this for all of us to hear. No wonder these are all #1 songs. I think you are #1 and so are those who play such fine works. Thank you for being there. Darrell

Excellant! and the talent level of each performer is admirable. I made it to the final track of the 2010 all state band auditions, but fell short. I'm already practicing for next year, but I know that one little mistake can knock you down 5 or 6 chairs. Great presentation!

Ivan, This is so beautiful!!!!! Your music is fabulous . I appreciate that you have added my new song to your station. I am honored that you added, though, the sound is not good on it, because my ears are still clogged because I have had a bad cold. Maybe I should have waited to finish it. :) Hugs and Many Blessings, Lekzee
