Story behind the song
Written mainly whilst lost in the wilds of Yorskhire, somewhere near Huddersfield, in very thick fog... direct response to a personal journey in becoming fathered.
Lyrics
I’m the vessel that ran from the firing,
The pot that denied it was clay,
Now worn and exhausted, I kneel in my pain,
Asking how can I find You today?
The cracks in the jar I can no longer hide,
With the gilt and the glitter I painted outside,
The earthenware vessel was spoilt by its pride,
The wreck of my stubborn will.
The bottle is empty and hollow,
These gifts that I’ve claimed as my own
I return in humility back to Your feet,
Will You reap where my failures have sown?
So I give up the struggle and crawl to a place
Where I hold out my hands and, with agonised face,
Empty and broken, surrender the race
To the tears in the Father’s eyes.
Father, I want to know Your love,
To be shaped by Your Spirit’s touch,
To be healed of my arrogance,
And restored by Your mercy.
And fill up this vessel with treasure,
Please help me turn error to right,
That people will see, not an intricate jar,
But a vessel infused with your light.
So you hold out Your arms and You help me to move
To the place where you want me, and that is enough.
For hope and acceptance, forgiveness and love
Are the tears in the Father’s eyes.
