Story behind the song
Close friendships are too often challenged by long distances, and time slips by, making it harder to keep up. Giving voice to the frustration and sense of loss that ensues, while not a complete solution, does help make it feel better.
Lyrics
You’re on my mind It’s been awhile Since we last spoke That’s how it goes 30 years back The 2 of us, friends Finding our way No stops or dead ends Fast forward decades ahead to us now Families and dogs and careers Sometimes I’m lost but I know for a fact You live down south, and I’m here How are the kids? Wife teaching part time? What about you? Managing fine? I’m doing well What can I say? Still working downtown The family’s okay It’s incredibly hard sometimes I must admit Train—meetings—coaching—the home Our annual weekend out on the trail Last time was nine years ago Nevertheless and you know it well Distance nor time will deny All of those laughs all those good times Best friend, best man for life Fast forward decades ahead to us now Families and dogs and careers Sometimes I’m lost but I know for a fact You live down there, and I’m here
