Story behind the song
I'd been in an on-again, off-again relationship that had always ended with her breaking up with me. Then I got the bright idea to be the one who did the breaking up last time we went around, in early July. This song came to me shortly after. For the record, we're now living together and quite happy. Cheesy, I know, but there ya go.
Lyrics
4th of July
Tell me baby, are you maybe
Feeling just a little crazy
For the way we're making a scene lately
Our time is pressed, and I'm obsessed
With how you have to be the best
At every single little thing you do
I have no pride, it's likely that I lied
When I said all the things you drove me to
Our love died, on the 4th of July
When I declared my independence from you
Tell me lover, is another
Answer lying under cover
Super-egos fail to re-discover
We go for rounds and won't back down
I feel abandoned you feel bound
Then we over-think everything through
I have no shame, though I feel that I'm to blame
For when you said "I'm not in love with you"
Our love died, on the 4th of July
When I declared my independence from you
Tell me sweetness, was completeness
In your scheme of life-long neatness
Is there something else it seems that we've missed
Ideals are tall to stand up to
My progress is always askew
I won't make you continue to make do
I fight regrets, and withdraw my bets
That I could remove your words' tattoo
Our love died, on the 4th of July
When I declared my independence from you
