Story behind the song
Written while interviewing with a major shoe company. As the staff prepared for an interview I was looking at a picture of DJ on the wall and wrote this poem in ten minutes. It is dedicated to my daughter and her little sister, and my friends from Oklahoma and Boston that I played on the playground with.
Lyrics
This is a story about two sisters who took dance class after school.
And when they got home, they had to follow Mama’s rules.
Change into your play clothes, she would say time after time.
Repeating it daily as if it were her favorite rhyme?
So off came my ballet slippers and tap shoes for big Sis.
And we would change into sneakers that look something like this.
We’d run all the way down the block to the corner street playground,
Playground
Where we were free to leap, and jump and all,
Because our favorite shoes had rubber soles like basketballs.
Some times we did more dancing with our friends at home,
I’d imitate big sister who let me tag along.
I like Hip Hop, my sister likes to crump, but one thing we have in common we both like for our music to have a little funk.
Pink, Black, Toe, Tap, is how our story goes, about two urban sisters who prefer wearing sneakers on their toes.
