Foxhole Faith inspired by an NBC news segment on 3/11/03 in which my sister appeared while stationed in Kuwait. My tribute to her and the other soldiers serving our country.
Four piece roots rock band. Guitars, mandolin, bass, drums. Original music with some favorite covers.
I am a member of The Other Side, a 4 piece roots-rock band based in Bloomington, Indiana.
Story behind the song
My sister appeared briefly on March 11, 2003 in an NBC Nightly News segment by reporter Don Teague. She was filmed singing at a church service at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait before the war. The report focused on how, before the war, soldiers commonly look at their own mortality and many turn to faith at that time. One morning, about a month later, I was thinking about that news segment as I was playing my guitar before leaving for work. I came across some nice chord progressions and some lyrics popped into my head and within a few days I had a song. It is my first attempt at songwriting. My immediate goal, after writing the song, was to make a CD to send her. I have received good feedback from friends, family and others. They have encouraged me to share this with others and that it is a story that should be told.
One of my guitar instructors, John Mead, played lead guitar and a fellow co-worker, Carlos Colon, played keyboards on this song. David Gohn, a member of our band, plays bass. My thanks to them!!! I did the vocals and rhythm guitar on the song.
Lyrics
Saw my sister on the Nightly News
in a church tent in Kuwait
Soldiers praying in their camouflage
Looks of worry on their face
For two seconds on NBC
Saw her singing to the sky
Another soldier with his head bowed down
Tears welling in his eyes
Foxhole faith, Soldiers praying to the Lord
Foxhole faith, praying, Lord, keep me safe
Soldiers waiting for the war to start
Wondering what will be their fate
Thinking ‘bout their friends and families
Coming home will have to wait
Saw my sister on the Nightly News
With her comrades gathered ‘round
Soldiers singing to God above
Praise and comfort in that sound
Foxhole faith, Soldiers singing to the Lord
Foxhole faith, Singing, Lord, Give me Strength
Foxhole faith, Foxhole faith, Foxhole faith
