Story behind the song
I was struck by how Rumsfeld wore a Red Tie right at the beginning, noting that it would have been unlikely in the cold war. In England, the right wing scapegoat 'asylum seekers' in the same way they used to target Asians and 'blacks'.
Lyrics
Red Tie
-------
There's a man with a red tie
Talking from the Pentagon.
The children on the border
Got to get out of the rain.
We're feeling fine,
Here behind the razor wire.
We're all asylum seekers now.
When the crops failed,
We moved on to the city.
We couldn't feed the kids
So we hit the road again.
Now we're on the shoreline,
Praying for a miracle.
We're all asylum seekers now.
And if you told me months ago
I wouldn't have believed it.
We had everything we needed
We were so free...
Now the churches are full
And the mosques and the synagogues.
The temple bells ringing
In the mountains and the fields.
The monarchs and the ministers
Singing for the cameras.
We're all asylum seekers now.
We're sending in food
And guns and diplomacy.
'Same as it ever was',
We're singing the same tune,
But no-one can hear
In the bamboo and the mud.
We're all asylum seekers now.
And if you told me weeks ago
I wouldn't have believed it.
Things were looking good
And we were so free...
At 30,000 feet
The turbulence is rising.
There's a sign on the door
There's something in the air.
We're praying for mercy
Now there's something in the water.
We're all asylum seekers now.
Well the sensors zoom in -
And the lasers lock on.
Sharp as a scimitar
They cut through the night.
The assets rain down
And they blitzkrieg the border.
We're all asylum seekers now.
And if you told me days ago
I wouldn't have believed it.
I just got my cheque
And we were so free...
We used up our savings
And feel into debt.
They wanted big money
And we knew all the risks.
There's a space in the trailer
And were leaving tonight.
We're all asylum seekers now.
Well we don't know how.
And we don't know why.
And we don't know when
We'll reach the end of the road.
We're spinning in space
Calling to the passers-by...
We're all asylum seekers now
And if you told me minutes ago
I wouldn't have believed it.
But what could they do
When we were so free...
You and me?
