Pilot 1. One employed to steer a vessel; a helmsman; a steersman. 2. Specifically, a person duly qualified, and licensed by authority, to conduct vessels into and out of a port, or in certain waters, for a fixed rate of fees. 3. Figuratively: A guide; a director of another through a difficult or unknown course. 4. An instrument for detecting the compass error. 5. The cowcatcher of a locomotive. 6. One who flies, or is qualified to fly, an airplane, balloon, or other flying machine. 7. A short plug at the end of a counterbore to guide the tool. Pilots are sometimes made interchangeable. 8. The heading or excavation of relatively small dimensions, first made in the driving of a larger tunnel. 9. A filmed or taped episode of a proposed television series, produced as an example of the series. It may be shown only to those television broadcast executives who may decide whether to buy the rights to the series, or aired to test viewer reaction or to interest sponsors. Beacon 1. To give light to, as a beacon; to light up; to illumine. 2. To furnish with a beacon or beacons. 3. A signal fire to notify of the approach of an enemy, or to give any notice, commonly of warning. 4. A signal, such as that from a lighthouse, or a conspicuous mark erected on an eminence near the shore, or moored in shoal water, as a guide to mariners. 5. A high hill near the shore. 6. That which gives notice of danger. 7. A radio transmitter which emits a characteristic signal indicating its location, so that vehicles may determine their exact location by locating the beacon with a radio compass; -- also called radio beacon. 5. That which provides guidance or inspiration; the Constitution has been a beacon for civil rights activists. Deluxe 1. impressively expensive; notably exceeding typical price or quality. 2. especially elegant and sumptuous; of the highest quality; as, a deluxe car; deluxe accommodations.
