Story behind the song
The virtually recorded excerpt starts with a link from the Agnus Dei (miserere nobis). A brass peroration using the material from the opening leads into a massive Bachian fugue for double chorus, boys' voices and large orchestra, uniting all the material from within the work, to the words Dona nobis pacem, amen. It ends with triumphant amens but at the last equivocally quiet boys suggesting that peace may not be that easy to come by.
