When you don't have a car, any old thing will do, and it works as a pretty good double entendre for impermanent love, if I do say so myself.

Story behind the song
While slogging my way to another thankless job in the cold, cold wind and rain, I had a huge desire, as one might expect, for a car - ANY car. I like sports cars and anything fast, but I wouldn't have cared if it had two cylinders and was made out of lead at that point. Just something that got me there and maybe had working heat, or at least all of the glass to keep the cold wind out. It was only after I wrote the lyrics that I realized that it's a great double entendre, the whole thing, for a 'temporary' relationship, the kind you get into because, well, who else is banging down your door. I kinda realized that there ain't much wrong with either situation, you're just doing what you gotta at the time.
Lyrics
A column shifter Bench seat Four good wheels Workin' heat Outside's rough Inside's rougher One Headlight Half a muffler Hear this noise comin' from God knows what Got all the windows Most of the lugnuts May not be much She gets me around Just keep the shiny side up and the rubber on the ground, yeah Well that's my baby Rollin' down the road Sometimes she's transportation Sometimes she's home She's home If you don't like her Just shut yer yap Ain't nothin' wrong With three hubcaps Badge on the fender Used to stoke some lust Got a lotta chrome But a bit more rust Ain't got no wipers No radio Just throw 'er in drive hit the gas 'n go Ain't got much flash It packs some heart Bumper sticker says "Watch for falling parts" Well that's my baby Rollin' down the road Yeah, sometimes she's transportation Sometimes she's home She's home A bit less than classic A littler more than used Paintjob looks all right But the screws'r comin' loose Can't lock the doors Or open the trunk "What's that smell?" We got the funk Ain't got no rent Ain't got no lease Just four old doors Some axle grease Well that's my baby That's my baby, baby Well that's my baby Rollin' down the road
