fun ballad in tribute to an odd romance: Queen Irene and Eugenides, Thief for her rival. This one is acoustic, stripped down, and happy despite all odds. (Kind of like the story itself.)

Fantasy-themed rock ballads and anthems
Our demo CD "The Dark Before Hope" draws on the work of Tolkien, especially the Lord of the Rings epic. Bethany, lead vocalist and lyricist, is building up a body of songs about other books she was moved by as well--she's a fantasy writer with a penchant to wax eloquent in many forms about literature. Daniel, primary musician and current producer, plays around on his bass and sometimes a guitar to find musical hooks to build more songs around.

Story behind the song
Dan was picking the catch you'll hear at the beginning of the song, and I started singing. I'd been considering doing a love-ballad for this story (to contrast Stealing Peace, a more gritty take), and the sound just fit. I made Daniel keep playing and sat down with paper and pen--a creating process we hadn't used in a while. Eugenides has always known the terrible queen of Attolia was more than her image of a cold goddess of wrath. When she was still young (a princess) and he was younger he caught sight of her dancing out in the palace garden as if imagining friends all around her. The vulnerable loneliness behind her severe reign propels him, years later, to try and rescue her from that reputation and that loneliness.
Lyrics
Dancing under the orange trees Eat one, two, three You don't know anything about me, But I saw you dance under the orange trees When I sneak through your chimneys And slip through the hallways while you dream I'm not trying to make you fear me I'm too captivated by that memory I saw you dance under the orange trees I'll eat one, two, three You don't know anything about me But I saw you dance under the orange trees... You've heard so much bad about me And they've told me the horror stories But let me tell you014they don't everything Both of us are more, I want you to see Now you're across from me Trying to explain this dichotomy You've always been a mystery Poisoning suitors, and so very lonely By yourself, dancing under the orange trees ...sweet Irene On that throne, looking down at me ...so cold, so lost Irene Come closer, you can dance with me ...Irene Lose those heavy earrings with the bees Should I steal you away? ...back to the orange trees I saw you dance under the orange trees I'll eat one, two, three You don't know anything about me But I saw you dance under the orange trees...
