This is a haunting, timeless song with a neo-folk feel, about an old sailor facing death as another of life's journeys. This is not the trad folk song, it is a completely fresh take on the subject.
Ideosycratic accoustic based siner-songwritter (Yup, can't call myself a singer), but don't die with the music still inside you.
Mogus Rougus is a unique collaberation between Symon of the Crybbe, his Puerus Eternus, and a glass of fine red (Rosemount Grenach Shiraz plays in many of the recording sessions).
The intention is self expression, and friendship with other musos.
Story behind the song
This one was written way-long ago but has stayed alive in me, and comes up everytime my life is about to take a turn in the direction of strange & unpredictable.
I would like to add harmonies, and maybe a fiddle solo.
Please feel free to make suggestions re the arrangement.
Lyrics
Fiddler's Green
I'm bound for Fiddler's Green,
Farewell to the sea,
It's all my life has been,
I must be gone.
The waves roll onto the beach,
they're enless,
clear and green and free.
Every change in the weather
brings memory.
Call me a following wind to take me
beyond the horizons I've seen.
In the perfect peace of the sea
lies Fiddler's Green.
The flotsam that was my dreams is scattered
on the sand at the high-tide mark.
The seagulls call "Old sailor,
it's getting dark".
I never learned how to love,
I'm sorry,
Sweet people that reached out to me;
Just when I thought this was home
I'd hear the sea...
Moving huge and wild and hungry,
fathomless thousands of years,
Been goo by your fire,
Good-bye, my dears.
I jettisoned all of my plans, they're lying
on the strand like cuttlefish bone.
Old sailor, smoke your pipe
and feel alone.
I'm bound for Fiddler's Green,
somewhere this voyage must end,
It's all my life has been,
Been good my friend.
I thought my roving was done,
Late summer, I walked by the sea,
The dolphins came and they called,
"One last journey".
Call me a following wind to take me,
Beyond the horizons I've seen,
I must be gone,for I'm bound
for Fiddler's green,
for Fiddler's green,
for Fiddler's green.
