Story behind the song
Three days passed..The large TV is dead. No communication with the outside world.
The horrible uncertainty. The worries for their daughter Irina .Raisa laying down in fetal position on a couch. Slowly raising herself up, goes to the window and like a little bird in cage
wistfully s looking out to freedom. Singing of her regrets, sadness and about the last wish to die in Misha’s arms.
Misha is calming her repeating again, that this is not the time to die yet.
After a while he tries the TV and it comes on. There is a live report on from Moscow, with Yelcin holding bouquet of flowers standing on a tank front of the Russian Federation building, with people and troops cheering and laughing.
Misha calls Raisa to see it and in rapture they singing their freedom duet.
At the end they fall it an embrace.
Moment of calm and peace spreads over them to be ruthlessly interrupted by gun shots, ringing just outside of the door.Misha runs to the door to make sure it’s locked.
Somebody bangs the door. Misha screams question who’s there.Chef Lebedev is anwering.Misha unlocks the door ,opens and there is the KGB man.All of a sudden the KGB man pushes in and now we can see that he is in hand cufs.Lebedev and other guards coming in with they guns aimed at the man.Lebedev says that the KGB man wanted to disappear but they caught him in time.
Misha says:â€let him go and let him taste the freedom he tried to take away from us.â€They run the KGB man out to cheers of everybody.
Lebedev says he has some sweetener for Misha, goes behind the door and brings back Irina, who meantime flew in from Moscow to be with her parents. The parents embracing Irina.
Misha thanks to all for their loyalty and everybody is pledging a allegiance to
president Mikhail Gorbachev. Our Misha.
The end of the opera.
Raisa Maximovna Gorbacheva emotionally never completely recovered from these horrific moments and some, including her husband, blame this ordeal for her physical deterioration and untimely death in year 1999.
This work is to honour her memory and also and not last to honour the work of President Gorbachev, who as we speak is very much active in world peace movement and promotion of democracy.
As was said at the beginning, the author of this opera is personally grateful to President Gorbachev for opening a new era of freedom , thus opening borders of a country of author’s origin ,to enable him to meet his children and so his grandchildren after thirty five years of forced absence.
Thank you.
