Story behind the song
Feeling trapped and wishing I could fly away. The day after I wrote the song, in an art gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I saw a painting by R.C. Gorman, the Navajo painter, of a woman flying in the sky.
Lyrics
Far up in a northern country, Sitting on a hill, an old woman looks at the sky. The moon riding on a cloud, The wind blowing hard, She sits, and she wishes she could fly. And down in a southern country, Sitting on the sand, A young woman looks at the sky, The sun shining on the sea, The waves splashing gold, She sits, and she wishes she could fly. And somewhere in the emerald islands, Dancing in a field, a little girl looks up at the sky/ The water laughing in the brook, The grasses growing tall, She dances and pretends she can fly. High above the rolling prairies, Singing in the trees, A soft breeze is moving through the sky, A light shining in the rain, In misty colors bright, She smiles and she knows she can fly.
