Story behind the song
The song is about my uncle's horse.
Lyrics
Somewhere down in Illinois, years and years ago lived a guy named Herman and his horse as white as snow. Well, perhaps he wasn't white. Perhaps light brown or gray. Who cares, it really isn't that important anyway. In the summer Herman let his horse outside to graze. The animal, named Buck, would simply while away the days. They never built a fence for him to keep him near his home, for Buck, to tell the truth, was way too lazy ever to roam. He simply sunned himself and grazed and stayed off Herman's back. He loved it in the pasture where ran through a railroad track. At first the noise of trains had really rattled up his years, but soon he grew quite used to it and deafer with the years. Then by happenstance one day the grass out by the track, grew thick, grew green, grew luscious and quite took old Buck aback. Unable to resist it, for it looked like such a treat, he stood himself upon the tracks and he began to eat. In the distance one could hear the rumbling of a train, a train approaching with a speed as if to seem insane. But Buck, quite used to trains and not smart anyway, refused to budge and inch. It was dumb, needless to say. Thud! Amid the usual sound of diesel thundering roar... or was it freight? There could be heard the sound of spatting gore. Bones were crunching, innards splitting, guts flew through the air, and then one half of Buck was here. The other over there. Herman heard the noise and he came running just to see there really was no hope. Poor Buck was dead as dead could be. He let it lie. He wasn't gonna touch it on a bet. It was too gross, so Herman's horse is lying down there yet.
