Story behind the song
The Original Onyx. James Latimer - Lead Guitar, & Vocals. Tony Wiese - Guitar, & Lead Vocals. Jack Mondlak - Keyboards. John Flannagan - Bass Guitar. Bob Holzner - Drums, & Percussion. This song was recorded live at the Parkside Inn on August 14, 1979. Recorded by Mike Mills with assistance from Phil Sypniewski. This is the final song of the Broken Toys (Derek) medley. This song morphed into an all out band effort and it shows. This is an epic song of collaborative masterful writing and arranging. John Flannagan wrote the beginning hyper fast super-runs part of the song that often almost had our fingers falling off (especially if I was rushing the song, lol). Tony Wiese then wrote the transitional haunting spooky part through the off-beat stops to set the tone of the evil voices. James Latimer then wrote the smooth Floydish trasition through the jazzy part and next vocal section (singing of Derek's further journey) leading to the final part of the song. The final part of the song brings the song back to a part of the original starting song of the medley Broken Toys. This part was written though a collaboration of myself, Bob Holzner, and Jack Mondlak. The final ending riffs and closing part of the song was a brain child of James Latimer. This I feel is our crowning achievement as a band and has some of the most challenging crafty difficult parts in all our music.
