Story behind the song
I was originally working on a song called "JWB," about that guy whose wife cut off his penis with a knife due to his relentless emotional and physical abuse of her. I thought it was the coolest story because not only did she do something completely radical and extreme to combat her husband's torment, but she was actually acquitted, while her husband did time for spousal rape. Justice is served sometimes. Anyway, in writing and recording that song, I included that creepy little falsetto thing, and ended up liking it so much that I wrote an entirely new song out of it. I wanted to continue the creeping and slimy vibe, so I wrote an oppressively heavy riff under it, and it just took off from there. What came out is likely the darkest, most joyless thing I'll ever write. The subject matter of the lyrics is autobiographical, and describes a lonely, dreary time of my life. I feel like the writing of this song was therapeutic in many ways with regards to dealing with that.
Lyrics
When I was down
God was dumb and blind
He would mutter softly in my ear
In pain
With empty eyes
And a blackened smile
Six hundred miles under warmth of love
And faith
Can I lie to myself?
I'll lie down
Because I'm faceless now
Slipping under now
What a great escape
Croak my last words out on a fraying tongue
For you
Under threat of love
Sinking quickly now
Steal my last breath from the whipping post
And kneel
Can I lie to myself?
I'll lie down
Because I'm faceless now
