Heidi Newfield's song 'Johnny & June' reminded me of a lyric I wrote a couple of weeks after Johnny died - and I thought it deserved to be turned into a song.
Lyrics
Johhny’s Gone Home
1.
His guitar case is stowed away, for the final time
He never played the perfect tune or sang the perfect rhyme
But he knows he got close enough, as he tried to walk his line
And his imperfections tell me; he could have been a friend of mine
Chorus:
Johnny’s gone home; Johnny’s gone home
To find his true love waiting on a step beneath the throne
Where a wandering heart and a tortured soul need never feel alone
Johnny’s gone home; Johnny’s gone home
2.
His songs reached out and touched the soul of Everyman
He penned their thoughts and feelings with an understanding hand
He showed every single sinner that they had the right to pray
And they could hear a common prayer in every song that Johnny played
Chorus:
Johnny’s gone home; Johnny’s gone home
To find his true love waiting on a step beneath the throne
Where a wandering heart and a tortured soul need never feel alone
Johnny’s gone home; Johnny’s gone home
Bridge:
If a trouble shared is a trouble halved, then half the world must know
That redemption is a rolling stone where moss will never grow
Johnny was a saint and sinner, which his whole life underlined
And he managed to be Everyman while being one of a kind
Chorus:
Johnny’s gone home; Johnny’s gone home
To find his true love waiting on a step beneath the throne
Where a wandering heart and a tortured soul need never feel alone
Johnny’s gone home; Johnny’s gone home
Johnny’s gone home; Johnny’s gone home
Johnny’s gone home
