Story behind the song
I wrote the first line(I didn't have to come here but my country needed me)as a military rookie in 1975 flying over southeast asia, (looked down at the jungle and was damn glad I was in the Air Force) picked it up again a couple years ago and finished. 20 years of military experience helped me to understand and appreciate what I was trying to say. Remembering how my mother and father reacted as I was enlisting in 1973 supplied the emotion behind the words.
