Contemporary band compositions, classical music arrangements, marches, jazz, symphonies, overtures. A collection from bands that I have played in throughout hi
Hello and welcome! "Symphonic Band Performances" is a compilation of recordings from several high school and college bands that I played in including the TMEA (Texas) All State Band, the TMEA Region X All Region Band, the Interlochen Arts Academy National Music Camp, the Cal Poly Tech Band, San Luis Obispo, the USAF Golden West Band, and recordings from my h.s. band, Beaumont H.S. and a few band recordings that were passed down to me. Also included are various All State groups and college and university bands. I participated and played in the large majority of these recordings. There are no professional recordings here and every recording is Public Domain. Most are available for free download. Each song has been converted from the original analog or digital source and edited with Audacity or Dak software. In the majority of these recordings, I play the tenor sax or alto sax, b flat or e flat clarinet, or directing. I was drum major for 2 years in high school, I have a BA from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where I studied music ed, composition and theory. I had about 500 more recordings I was planning to digitize and upload, but this past Nov. 20th, my home was completely destroyed by fire, and all the contents, including all my music and instruments. So, this is it. Please feel free to post a comment here or on my member page. If you like, please become a fan by clicking "I'm a fan" below.

Story behind the song
This is performed at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan, by High School Symphonic Band #1. This was my second summer at the academy, playing b-flat clarinet. The Composition Scenes from the Louvre is a five movement work depicting the development of the Louvre during the Renaissance. Written by Norman Dello Joio, it was originally for the 1964 NBC television series on the Louvre. After winning the Emmy for outstanding television score, it was adapted for band a year later for the Baldwin-Wallace College Wind Ensemble. Dello Joio conducted the premier on March 13th, 1966. It is published by Hal Leonard, Co. The score itself is entirely in C, a possible hazard for conductors. The Renaissance Era The Renaissance Era lasted roughly from 1450-1600. Renaissance means, ìrebirth.î In Europe, it marked revitalization in religion, art, and music. Much of the art and music was based on Christianity or made for the Catholic church. The Composer Norman Dello Joio was born in New York, NY in 1913. Descended from three generations of organists, he himself was a church organist and choir director by the age of fourteen. He attended Julliard for three years, and then transferred to Yale where he studied composition with Paul Hindemith. He has been awarded with the Pulitzer Prize and an Emmy. The Form The movements which make up Scenes from the Louvre are in arch form, meaning that the two outside movements are the same (fanfare), movements two and four are similar (light), with movement three in the middle (chorale). The movements center mostly around the keys of C, F, and A. The Movements I.The Portals This movement depicts the exterior of the Louvre, and the beginning of the day, represented in the chimes. This movement is a stately fanfare/processional. Harmonically, this movement is tonally ambiguous. There seems to be a mixture of G Lydian, g minor, and Ab Major. II. "Children's Gallery" This is a representation of Henry the IVís children playing in the 950 foot Grand Gallery. Harmonically, this movement also begins in tonal ambiguity. However, there is finally a sense of harmony as at measure 11 we are in the key of F Major. The main theme of this movement is the childrens theme, stated in the oboe and clarinet. III. "Kings of France" This movement serves as an homage to all of the kings who built up the Louvre during the renaissance. Harmonically, this movement stays around the key of G. This is in a chorale style, with the opening chorale in the saxes. IV. "The Nativity Paintings" This movement is depicting the many works of art based on the birth of Christ. The majority of this movement is based on the church hymn, ìIn Dulci Jubilo, also known today as "Good Christian Men Rejoice," featuring the clarinet and oboe in beautiful solos. Harmonically, this movement is also in the key of G throughout, with a brief lapse (measures 22-25) in the key of C. V. "Finale" This movement is the jubilation felt after many works and artifacts were returned to the Louvre after Germany's occupation during World War II ended. This is the most lively, quick-noted movement of the work. Harmonically, once again, the movement centers around a G tonal center. The first melodic motive is presented in the cornets and trombones. Scenes from the Louvre is a fascinating piece, depicting the great history, and even greater works of art of the famous Paris museum.
