My name’s Lenny Pettinelli but you can call me Nipsy. I’ve been playing keys and singing songs in one way or another for most of my life. I started playing music when I was about 8 years old and I never stopped. I started to realize that music was all I really wanted to do when I was about 17 and that’s when playing the piano became the central staple in my life. Being a Los Angeles native, I felt it was time for a change of scenery, so I decided to attend college at Humboldt State University amidst the redwood trees and ferns. During my time there, I was heavily influenced by many styles of western and world music including jazz, classical, romantic, baroque, reggae, funk, afro-beat, indian music, latin music, rock and much more. The influence of these styles is reflected in my original music. I also played with a diverse assortment of bands and ensembles during my time at school, some of whom are world renowned. Over the past 8 years I have written over 200 pieces that span over multiple genres. I will admit that I am mainly drawn to funk, jazz, hip-hop, and soul, but I love to play any and everything. Some of my biggest influences include Tom Waits, Dr. John, James Brown, The Rolling Stones, and Charles Mingus. There’s probably a little of all of them in my music. I have four very different but very wonderful projects at the present:
1. Nipsy (rock, funk, jazz)
2. The Whiskey Fish (comedy rock)
3. Noodles and Munch (electronica)
4. Dubba L (Dubstep/electronica)
I also love to play solo piano as well. I have been back down in the L.A. area for almost two years now. I am recording and performing as much as possible but I am always still hungry for more. I have played over 500 shows in my life and I hope to play many, many more.
My main goal is always to invoke eomotion in my listeners so I look forward to making you smile, laugh, think, or cry sometime soon......and remember......Nipsy Loves Ya!
