Story behind the song
Song started out as a kind of Oh Mercy period Bob Dylan song. Seeing as I just don't have the depth, craftsmanship, and life experience to carry off a convincing performance, I changed the chords, key, melody and rhythm and morphed it into a modern noise rock style tune with a lot of aggression and angst. A style I generally don't gravitate to.
Lyrics
How did I get here?
What led my hand?
I always saw myself as solid rock
When I was more like shifting sand.
The sun is breaking
Just over the ridge
And all those years and wasted tears
Are water underneath the bridge.
I've heard it said, a mistake is taking a turn when you should have gone straight.
Maybe a mistake is just a mistake.
At times I was childish
Felt my insight deserved a prize.
I was many things at different times
But never was I wise.
There's no shortcut to wisdom
And you can't be old while you're young.
You crave the answers to the questions ahead,
That you can't ask 'til they come.
Some people say a mistake is passing on what's real then choosing a fake.
Maybe a mistake is just a mistake.
With seconds on the clock and a full court press.
The older I get, the more that I learn that I know less.
The games we played when we were young
Were played out of thoughtlessness
But never were they fun.
I look in the mirror
And I stare back at me.
The more I see, the more I feel
That I feel that I don't like what I see.
Your light grew dim
With every shadow that I cast.
And the flaws I found in you were just the faults
in myself I couldn't see past.
Some may believe a mistake is stepping on the gas instead of pulling the brake.
Or that a mistake is passing on what's real then choosing a fake.
I've heard it said a mistake is taking a turn when you should have gone straight.
Maybe a mistake...
Maybe a mistake...
Maybe a mistake is just a mistake.
I made a mistake.
