Story behind the song
I wrote this song at work during some down time. The idea of co-writing a song with a bird was a little crazy, but I later realized that it could be taken symbolically as well. I like to think of this song as the invocation of a muse. The melodies for the interludes popped into my head one at a time over a number of days, long after the song was written. One of them, the final interplay between the recorder and violin, popped into my head at two a.m. when I couldn't sleep. I jumped out of bed, quickly wrote down what was in mind, and promptly went back to bed. I hope that if I have children one day, I'll be able to sing this song to them before they go to sleep.
Lyrics
Songbird, sing me a song The prettiest melody that I've ever heard I've got a pencil and paper If you write the tunefulness I'll write the words Make it a song about love A song about beauty or long ago times Songbird, sing me a song You find the motifs and I'll find the rhymes Songbird, now we are two I'll find a harmony to go with your song My voice isn't as lovely But if you will let me I'll sing right along Let's sing of myths and of legends Of stories once told by the soft firelight Songbird, I am not tired Let's sing together from morning til night All of my cares are gone Now as I learn your song The workaday world's far away Watch as they come and go Rush around to and fro Songbird, with you I will stay Songbird, don't fly a way How will I know what to sing when you've gone I wish that I was a songbird Making up melodies, waking the dawn I'd sing of clouds on the air Of things that I'd seen as I floated up there Songbird, where have you gone? All I can sing of is stories and legends Of hopes and of dreams Of suffering, beauty, faith in the unseen Of all that I'll be and all that I was Of dancing, candlelight, heartbreak and love Songbird, where is your melody? I've lost your melody
