Story behind the song
This was one of those (gifts from the Lord) songs that came quickly. I sat at the piano and was dinking around with a theme from Yes "Tales from Topographic Oceans", I changed the meter, and changed the melody (after the first 3 notes) but kept the idea of this flowing melody over the tonic. Within an hour a new song was born. Verse 3 is adapted from "Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts" attr. Bernard of Clairvaux, 1091-1153. I read this verse in a devotional and immediately knew it was the missing piece. I wish the arrangement was that easy, but alas it is a labor of love, a work still in progress.
Lyrics
v. 1 Quickly, quickly come with me I'm on my way to Bethlehem. Come and see this newborn king, the angel choirs sang of Him. "For unto us a child is born today! Sing alleluia, Christ has come to Save!" v 2. Kings and wise men bow before Him, Shepherds come to worship Him. He shall spare the poor and needy, Save the souls of sinful man. "For unto us a child is born today! Sing alleluia, Christ has come to Save!" (bridge) And His name shall be called, His name shall be called "Wonderful" And His name shall be called, His name shall be called "Counselor" The Everlasting Father The Almighty God! Prince of Peace, Emmanuel, God with us, Prince of Peace v. 3 Jesus joy of loving hearts; O fount of life, Thou light to men; From the best that earth imparts We turn unfilled to Thee again. "For unto us a child is born today! Sing alleluia, Christ has come to Save!"
