Lyrics
Interview with a Rock ‘n Roll Star I drove up to his mansion for the interview He looked older than his age of sixty two We settled on the porch overlooking his lake I noticed now and then how his hand would shake. “We weren’t always famous” he said from his chair “I had a desk job that was going nowhere. I still lived at home with my mum and dad. That scene was driving us all stark raving mad.” He leaned forward, flicked an ash from his smoke, I declined his offer of bourbon in my coke “I shouldn’t either. It’s against doctor’s advice” The only thing he added to his bourbon was ice. His threw his head back and the drink went down. His study of the ice ended with a frown. And when he noticed the notes I was taking He quickly explained, “It helps with the shaking.” He settled back to get to the matter at hand. “My only joy in life was playing in our band. All of us had day jobs so we practiced at night. We’d practice until dawn to get a song right. Mike worked at a garage. So we practiced there. His father was the owner and he didn’t care. That’s where he already kept his drum set. Yep, come rain or flood, that’s where we met. Jimbo worked the docks loading ships with freight Because of the long drive he would show up late. When he got there, we would all give him shit. But when wailing on his guitar, he made up for it. Beady-eyed Brown was just learning the bass. He said rhythm was in his blood; part of his race. We got better. Everything began to sorta click. When the chicks started dancing, that was a kick. The gigs we played would always be packed. It was Jimbo who got us our first record contract. We got a manager. And began to tour. Where we played, sometimes, I wasn’t even sure. I married a reporter for the Rollin’ Stone,” he said. “The interview went great and was done in bed. It wasn’t a year before that marriage was blown. All my wives seem to leave after taking the throne.” He coughed and I noticed his hands began to shake. “You think I would have learned by my fifth mistake. Women, drugs, and guitars are my greatest vices. And for the love of all three, I’ve paid the prices. We had ten platinum albums when it first began. And he reached out to show me his shaking hand. We were in the recording studio and after ten takes There was nothing I could do to stop the shakes. The doctor I first went to said there is no cure. Of course I’ve checked with others just to make sure.” He turned his head and quickly brushed a tear “So that was pretty much the end of my Rock ‘n Roll career. I don’t see the band members much anymore. We got together once but it wasn’t like before. He shrugged his shoulders, sighed, and sadly said, Mike called last Christmas to tell me Beady was dead. Now I’ve got six kids from six different wives And I find I enjoy being in their lives I have given everyone their choice of car And made darn sure they could all play guitar I always wanted a house overlooking the water. The only swingin’ I do is my granddaughter On a swing seat tied to a branch in that tree. Sittin’ on this porch is the only Rockin’ for me.”
