Story behind the song
I had a business, in Manhattan, that failed because I didn't take responsibility for it. I depended too heavily on others (clients and partners)to do the work that ultimately, only I could have done. I lost the business and was homeless for about 5 months. I literally went from an office in the Ed Sullivan Theatre Bldg. and an apartment on Central Park West to the floor of whatever friend would take me in. This lyric came to me as I was recovering from the addictions I had sought solace in, while living in a studio apt. in New Jersey. Jonathan Dubose, Jr. collaborated on this and one other song for my debut release and is producing the next CD with me and my partner, Peter Lufrano. This lyric was the most difficult for me to sing, because I had to remember the man I used to be in doing so. If you see yourself in the lyric, it's okay...it's never too late to change.
Lyrics
Something for Nothing
(Douglas Powell, Jonathan DuBose, Jr.)
Alright humph (spoken)
I used to believe (everybody owed me something)
I used to think (I could have it all)
I used to persuade (always wanting something for nothing)
Believing only in myself (and my right to have it all)
Thought I could hold on,
to the way I first believed.
But with every failure,
I found it harder to deceive.
Those once simple lies
Became harder to disguise.
And, my soul grew weaker
As my pride sank deeper.
I called out from my desperation
For angels to my situation.
But, Jesus, himself, stepped in
Exposing my games of pretend.
Showed me the errors of my ways,
Hallelujah, its a brand new day.
I used to behave (acting like God owed me something)
But, now, I must concede (He can have my All).
I used to believe (I wanted something for nothing)
Now, God has turned this nothing into
Something. Yeah!!
My God has turned this nothing into Something.
Twas not so long ago,
I was homeless,
Penniless,
Friendless,
Helpless,yes.
But, now, my God has turned
This nothing into Something (Hes turned)
Nothing!
(Ohetc.)
Nothing!
Into Something, Hes turned.
Yeah, Hallelujah, Its a new day.
(Nothing!)
It can be one for you, too.
(Into Something, Yeah)
Whatever you want, Gods got it
Whatever you need
