Story behind the song
I wrote the lyric originally about a cop shooting, changed it after Amadou Diallo was shot by four cops in his Brooklyn vestibule, and would later add to it, a reference to the Columbine High School shootings, that now seems to be the line most recognized. Somehow, this song just kept evolving. I suppose it's a sign of the times. It's one of my favorite lyrics in that it really does address the way I feel, living as a Black man in these United States. I heard the tune for this lyric on a trip back from CT, while putting GETHSEMANE together in it's infancy. I was so 'taken' with the tune that I stood in the middle of Grand Central Station singing in my portable player, trying to get it all down. I finished as I walked to my front door in 'Jersey and never changed a note from that original tape. Sometimes these tunes are just waiting to be written. Be sure to check out the instrumental tag of this tune entitled, THE HARVEST.
Lyrics
SAD HARVEST (Brother EDEN Douglas, Jonathan DuBose, Jr.) Sad Harvest, Sad Harvest I've been crying through the night, listening to the news So much to hate in this world, the violence, the abuse. Holy Father Knows Best,... I sure hope they're right. But, I ain't comfortable in this city, tonight. This year's gonna be a Sad Harvest. We're reaping the ignorance we've sown. If we'd only just listened and cared a little more, Better neighbors we could have grown. This years gonna be a Sad Harvest. Were reaping ALL that weve sown If we only had listened, and loved a little more, Better neighbors, we could have grown. A mothers son shot, I saw it on the evening news 41 bullets, in his vestibule Another school shooting, in this very afternoon. And, I wonder why, I stay in my room. I can't stay awake, so afraid to sleep. I'm afraid of being planted, six feet deep. This years gonna be a Sad Harvest. 'Cause love cant grow nothin' in this soil. Prayed for rain, and it fell on asphalt grain. Another season passed with no resolve. Can't stay awake, still afraid to sleep. I've traded countin bullets for Bo Peep's sheep. Go to sleep. Go to sleep. Go to sleep. Go to sleep. Try to sleep I can't sleep. I'm tired of countin' bullets, for Bo Peeps sheep. Sick and Tired of countin bullets for Bo Peeps sheep. I'm tired of countin bullets for Bo Peeps sheep. Sad Harvest, Sad Harvest, Sad Harvest (fade) Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.
