This song is my environmental conscience playing up and wanting to make a statement on behalf of the planet. Sorry if it comes over a bit pompous or simplistic but surely someone has to state the bleedin' obvious. I hope someone enjoys this song (and

I play guitar and sing against backings that I have created using various software tools. I am therefore a home recorder primarily concerned with minting decent recordings of my own songs rather than a performer.

Story behind the song
I am a lover of beautiful places and have long fretted about the destruction of natural environments and indeed the very clockwork of our planets cycles. I decided to have a bash at expressing my frustration at our blind chase after economic growth at whatever cost. The evidence is before us all that the world economy simply cannot continue to grow exponentially, the basis on which all our economies seem to operate. Our planet is groaning unde the strain now, imagine what another 20 years of 2-5% growth per annum in population and economic activity will bring. Anyway 'we're all in this game' including me and so there'll be 'no happy ending' I convinced. We just have to wait until the world economy crashes under it's own chase for growth at all costs... oh damn... it just has... where did my savings go...?
Lyrics
Hey I got a story I promise won’t bore ye’, not love and glory, not scary or gory, It ain’t going to moralise, or patronise, antagonise or spin no lies I ain’t peddlin’ belief, I got no blessed relief, no palliative, just a feeling of grief A questioning why, a helpless sigh, a tear in my eye, an’ the truth to deny Our spaceship Earth, mankind’s only berth, our empires true worth, is feeling a dearth Of care and attention, a sense of direction, some good intention, thought I should mention This world has been shattered and all that mattered, bloodied and battered, torn up and scattered It’s raped and it’s plundered, cannoned and sundered, poisoned and hungered, meddled and blundered I’m singing this song for the Earth I don’t think we know what she’s worth We live on the skin of a bubble An’ we’re turning it all into rubble Consumptions the name, money’s the game, it’s business to blame, they’re immune to shame Money is earned from the forests they burned, nothing returned and nature is spurned Promises are made but bribes get paid, the developers invade, and memories fade Consume what they make, in mountain and lake, make no mistake, give them their take Well I ain’t too sure I got any cure, for all we endure, our intentions are pure You got your charities, they’re your vanities, insanities, to throw back at me I don’t wanna’ decry, the things that we try, but while we still buy they don’t apply Our democracy is built on hypocrisy, a commercial autocracy, yeah that’s what I see I’m singing this song for the Earth I hope you all know her true worth There’s no other place we can live So we all need to learn how to give We pay the last bill as the chemicals spill, the watercourses fill and the animals take ill In a chemical defeat, our atmosphere’s beat, it soaks up the heat, an’ makes glaciers retreat Sea levels rise, in front of your eyes, their currents revise causing flood plain demise We’re changing the weather, not just now but forever, can’t go back whenever, through later endeavour So there’s no happy ending, to this story I’m vending, no fixing or mending, it’s just heart rending There’s no-one to blame, they don’t have one name, there’s no-one to shame, we’re all in this game It’s a failure of nerve, to think that your verve, your desire to serve, postpones what we deserve It isn’t right, that with all our insight, all our power and might, we should snuff out the light I’m singing my song for the Earth I want you to know what she’s worth We’re between a rock and hard space We must learn to live here in grace We must learn to live here in grace We must learn to live here in grace
