Story behind the song
This song is about domestic violence and was originally written to be performed by a folk group called "Hysterical Tendencies". I pride myself that I have never resorted to physical violence towards a partner. If problems are unresolvable I have always walked away. Though I have been an unwilling witness in too many cases among my acquaintances... Enough for me to feel I knew what I was talking about when I wrote this song.
Lyrics
Two Lovely Black Eyes No one could have warned her, She wouldn't have listened anyway. She got caught between the naked truth, And the games that people play. She could have gone the distance she claims, Maybe she is right - But sometimes it's better to lose than win Or stay out of the fight. CHORUS: She's got bruises and burns And lessons she should never have learned. She's got memories that keep up her up at night. Two lovely black eyes - and a purse crammed full of lies - And when she goes to bed now she keeps on thelight. You only hurt the one you love, Isn't that what some people say? He must have loved her dearly, To have treated her that way. It's not all his fault she claims, Maybe that is true. But his hurt pride cannot compare, With what she has been through. CHORUS Alone she sits in her mother's house, Trying not to think. She knows that she'd go back to him, If he'd just stay off the drink. "Sober he's a gem," she says. That I can't deny. But the scars she bears are evidence, That he never could keep dry.
