Story behind the song
This is a song that had its start back in 2001 when I was living in New Jersey. One day the phrase "In the silence before dawn" popped into my head, and I thought it was a great line for a song and I filed it away. A few months later I added the first few lines and came up with a melody. And then it sat, for many years, until the summer of 2008 when I picked it up and decided to see where the song ended up.
It has become a song about being in that moment where you know that the storm has been weathered, that the night has been passed, but the new day has yet to begin.
This is a rough version of the song - it will be redone soon with more instruments added.
Lyrics
In the silence before dawn, I stand arms open wide to the heavens above
Catching starlight as it’s falling down, washing over me, into me, cleansing my soul
My thoughts are beginning to clear
As the stains from old memories have started to fade from where I’d
Kept them all stacked in a row, a constant reminder of the things that I’d done
Now, you have always been there to let me know that you care and
You want the best for me, I do understand
But to clean off that shelf I had to dust it myself
Or how could I be where I am
Verse 2:
In the silence before dawn, a night breeze is stirring the fragments of dreams
That have scattered like leaves on the ground
Reflections of things that could never have been
For too long I’d walked the same halls, surrounded by visions of how it should be
I had thought they were keeping me safe
But their weight pulled me over, it was so hard to stand
Now the clouds are receding, and I’m barely breathing
Regaining my balance as I open my eyes
You said I wouldn’t make it, but though I’ve been shaken
My strength is returning as I’m…
Chorus:
Catching starlight, catching starlight, catching starlight, starlight
Verse 3:
In just moments the sun will appear, reaching out with soft fingers, caressing my tears
Bringing to light a new day; I’ll finally step forward, my face to the sky
I remember, you told me I’d be scared and lonely
If I ever wandered too far from my home
But I heard the night whisper, and I could not resist her
As she called me into the unknown
I’ll admit you were right, what I found in the night
Was pain and confusion on a path so unclear
But that’s not the ending, the story kept bending.
Never dreamed I would find myself here
Chorus:
Catching starlight, catching starlight, catching starlight, starlight
Catching starlight, Starlight
Catching starlight, Starlight
Starlight
