Story behind the song
Kelly and I used to take the kids camping at Fitzroy Harbour, right on the Carp river, which really isn't much more than a brook. But we had a spot where the water went fast, and we'd spend lazy days riding down the river, while the kids played in the water (we'd occasionally talk them into bringing us a beer. :) The sound samples used at the end of this: Child Laughing by Shades Stream at Krka Falls by Satoration (using the CC sample licenses.)
Lyrics
When I was a younger man I used to burn right out of town Me and my lady used to pitch a tent by the fireweed and a running stream We used to take a rubber raft on the summer's hottest hottest day Pretend our little lazy brook was white water down the Ottawa You don't know where a river runs until you follow it down You don't know how to have some fun until you ride that water down Riding down the Carp River Cool water flowing by, cold one in my hand Lazy river's got the groove and I'm the guitar man You don't know where a river runs until you follow it down You don't know how to have some fun until you ride that water down Riding down the Carp River We don't have to worry about tomorrow Don't have to think about where that river runs You don't know where a river runs until you follow it down You don't know how to have some fun until you ride that water down Riding down the Carp River
