Lyrics
SLOW DEATH(with a paycheque) Written in a boozy, melancholy, down-to-my-last-dime 3/4 time by John Gary Bovay © 1993 INTRO Violin's notes approximate the lyrics' syllables. VERSE 1: When you work. For someone else. You're not paid. To think yourself. Repetition's grind just eats at your day... Though you work. A job for years. What you learn. Will earn no cheers. From a boss who says: “Nice, but do it.., this way...” CHORUS A: In the time. I have worked. For that small-minded jerk. You would have thought I earned my fair share of say... My ideas. I have found. Get beaten into the ground. By a response that says: “That's not, why you're paid.” VERSE 2: The boredom. The frustration. The thin paycheque. That I am making. Oh. I know I will, die here one day... With the shifts. That I am working. The rare time off. Is just a token. No matter where I go, I never can get away... CHORUS B: In the time. I have worked. For that small-minded jerk. You would have thought I earned my fair share of say... But my ideas. I have found. Get beaten into the ground. By a response that says: “That's not, why you're paid!” VERSE 3: Well times turned. For the worse. This working man. Found out first. When a notice came with my hourly pay. (It read...) (Spoken) “Your job. You're doing fine. But to fatten. Our bottom line. (Sung) Your position will be redundant in May...” CHORUS C: With all the time. I have worked. For that small-minded jerk! You would have thought I earned my fair share of say..! Though-I-worked-that-job, for years. What I learned earned no cheers. From a boss who said “Too bad! But things happen that way.” VERSE 4: (Then I recalled...) The boredom. The frustration. The thin paycheque. I was making. Oh! I thought I would, die there one day! With the shifts. That I was working. The rare time off. Was just a token. No matter where I'd go, I never could get away. VERSE 5: Cause it was just a... SLOW DEATH! With a paycheque. Something I didn't need anyway....! Though my job. Is long gone! I will sing a new song! And they'll hear me sing my song soon some day. 'Cause it sure beats a... SLOW DEATH! With a Paycheque...... End.
