Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
A true and very sad story ... the cover photo is from the shores of Lake Victoria where all he had to do was avoid the odd Hippo at dusk... but in the grounds of a posh hotel in Kenya, life can be much more dangerous... Back to the blues with a section after the break that becomes suitably funereal (New Orleans style).
Lyrics
The Mombassa train, he’s long sleek and brown The Mombassa train, he’s long sleek and brown You really need to see him, to see what’s going down Thicker than a finger and eight inches long He may be slow but you know he really comes on strong The Mombassa train, he’s got legs not wheels But the way he moves you’ll hardly believe he’s real The Mombassa train, don’t get stopped by leaves on the line I think he eats them for breakfast and says hey they’re mighty fine I saw him coming, coming down the track I did my best to turn him back But some tourist with a clumsy shoe My Mombassa train he made a mess out of you The Mombassa train, my poor segmented friend He looked so good but he came to a sticky end
