Along with Morning Missle, the Larry Jones Experience (LJE), Stand, and others, Chaw was a key component of the early Kansas City punk/hardcore scene.
Always the weak stepsister of more hip college town Lawrence, Kansas City didn't have much of a punk - hardcore scene pre-Nirvana. Not being old enough to drive out to Lawrence (40 miles away), Chaw was part of a group of bands that played affordable (often free) shows in and around KC. Chaw vocalist Scott ran a zine called Project KC that advertised the shows, had a classifieds section that hooked up band members, and was involved in many of the shows. Usually any show proceeds went to paying for the free music & politics zine.
