Taking advantage of the now often means a break with the then. That's the challenge.

Story behind the song
I hosted a weekly open mic night at a coffee shop in Syracuse, NY called Happy Endings. When I got home one night, I sat down and within an hour, had banged out this song about forced change. Not forced by someone else, but forced by ourselves. Sometimes, you gotta jump tracks without the conductor switching lines for you. It's not easy ....... unless, of course, you let it be. But that's the trick.
Lyrics
shell late one night i got home from a coffee shop i got out my flat top sat on the floor whipped up a ditty went something like this bout life and what it’s all for a few weeks ago i got to talkin’ with a friend she was down about the road she was on i respectfully suggested she get on her way pick herself up before her days are all gone i don’t know what you got to do i said to sell it to yourself it’s just a bump in the road you’ve got a few tracks running side by side and sometimes you just gotta jump you know i always pass by people crying about the times it’s raining again today again i’m running late why’s my coffee cold? where is the sun/? i got a parking ticket this morning well isn’t that great? i just want to hop up on a soapbox spread the message of the forest and the trees ‘cause life ain’t so bad in fact and i believe that it’s pretty good if you let it be - if you just let it go and be - a friend of mine recently related a story about a friend of his i did not know something about how he got caught by the cops and ain’t that a shame well no that’s how it goes when you run against the wind my friend you must remember to spin before you spit much of what we define as good and bad is nothing more than justification for our time and what we make of it a turtle in his shell may be shielded from the world and the world may be safe from his sins but unless he pops his head out to check out what’s up the hare will surely always win it was out on a road trip when i got a little lost that i finally found where i was coming from that was good enough so i grabbed my stuff headed out west for a tour of the sun some people i have heard it said say the world is cold and loney i’d like to offer up my own limited point of view that it’s good if you let it be - if you just let it go and be - i was walking around and like i sometimes do i looked up and saw the prettiest sky purple and red and orange and blue and on and on and on and i wonder what makes it all right how we get from the fall to the summer season then i thought to myself why do i always try to give all these things a reason? why can’t i just accept as is all the beautiful things that are give what i can and use what i need and spend the rest of my days with this here guitar but around i go and grow dizzy looking for meaning and something more get lost in my own philosophy forget sometimes to step out the door and get out into the air and feel the cool breeze on my cheeks breathe in real deep let things develop into something good it’ll happen i know if i let it be - if you just let it go and be -
