This is a subdued and thoughtful ballad about recovering a sense of proper perspective after suffering a loss. This song was played on the homemadehitshow.com podcast HMHS 120 and was favourably reviewed.
Light acoustic rock folk
I play guitar and sing against backings that I have created using various software tools. I am therefore a home recorder primarily concerned with minting decent recordings of my own songs rather than a performer.
Story behind the song
The motivation for this song was really to get back to basics with a fingerpicked acoustic guitar and some thoughtful lyrics.
The song was played on the www.homemadehitshow.com podcast HMHS 120 and thanks to Tony and Dave for the show and the favourable comments on the forum.
I liked the connection to the stars and the idea of them looking over what we do with the majestic disdain that comes of their longevity. My idea was of someone also looking down on and over their lives from a rooftop, comparing the relentless and uncaring advance of the human tide against the eternal stillness of the stars. Sounds a bit poncy now I'm explaining it...
I also found myself enjoying and seeking out the repetitive use of phrases in the lyrics, shifting the context slightly in each. It was an intentional thing and not a lack of imagination, honest...
I hope someone likes the song, I appreciate my singing is not exactly winning awards but hopefully the song can still touch someone despite that.
Lyrics
I climbed out on the roof tonight, and looked out at the stars
Infinite, eternal, they look down on who we are
They see our frantic efforts, to rise up from our pains
But in a blink we’re gone again, despite of all our gains
I sat up on the roof tonight, in the gaze of all those stars
I sang a song for you tonight, and played on my guitars
Down below the world moved on, people made their way back home
Husbands wives and lovers, going back to their touchstones
I thought up on the roof tonight, and reached out to the stars
I felt the loss of you tonight, and shouted at the cars
Down below the world moved on, its heart seemed set in stone
No-one cared for me tonight, I felt I was alone
I stood upon the edge tonight, and cried out to the stars
Infinity, eternity, one step to go so far
To travel from this world tonight, to find my way back there
One step to numb the pain tonight, one step to never care
I was caught between tonight, this world and the stars
Infinity eternity, they seemed like prison bars
Too long, too sure for me tonight, I guess too soon I’ll know
Capricious and uncertain, it’s the way that our lives go
I stepped back from the brink tonight, and thanked my lucky stars
Let go my grief for you tonight, and waved down at the cars
Down below the world moves on, and someone looks for me
Capricious and uncertain, but I hope it’s meant to be
