Story behind the song
It's more or less about examining your inner monster and coming to terms with it. The literal story is about a serial killer contemplating his victims and the difference between martyrdom and monsterhood.
Lyrics
Dawn breaks so silent Bringing the night's end Lighting the bodies withered cold dead in the basement Splayed open wide The lungs have capsized Relish in horror striken looks set in their eyes And I wonder if that's how Joan of Arc felt As she burned into the ground Like a dimestore philosopher Could the words escape her mouth? Begging for release saying "I'm the chosen one"? It's not the only thing that keeps me up at night Night comes so slowly The day is taunting Images of the severed limbs flow through my body So delightful The way the skin pulls Over the cheekbones from the face that I'm to cull And I wonder if that's how Guy Fawkes felt With his head up in the noose Like a dimestore philosopher Did he grasp for an excuse? Begging for release saying "I'm not a monster"? It's not the only thing that keeps me up at night And I wonder if that's how Joan of Arc felt As she burned into the ground And I wonder if that's how Guy Fawkes felt Could the words escape his mouth? And I wonder if this is how Genghis Khan felt Did he relish in their cries? And all I am is a dimestore philosopher, but am I right? It's not the only thing that keeps me up at night
