Mission is Healing and Deliverance Texts: Mark 16:14-20; James 5:13-18 Introduction 1. Healing and deliverance is a Biblical part of mission (i) Sickness and death were not God’s original plan for people. (ii) God promised healing to the people of Israel if they obeyed his laws. (Ex23:25-26) (iii) God revealed himself as “I am the Lord who heals you” (Ex 15:26) (iv) Jesus spent a great deal of his time on earth healing the sick. (v) Jesus’ message was that God’s kingdom was invading the world. (vi) Jesus trained his followers to do works of healing and deliverance (Luke 9:1-6, Luke 10:1-24; Matthew 28:20). (vii) Jesus promised that his followers would do miracles. (John14:12-14) (viii) The first Christians expected healings to occur. (Mark 16:17-18). (ix) The NT word for ‘salvation’ can also be translated as ‘healing’. (x) When God’s mission is complete there will be no more sickness. (Rev 21:1-4) 2. Healing and deliverance is a Battle filled with mystery “14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.” (James 5) 3. Healing and deliverance is a Basic aspect of church life Conclusion Pray for God to teach us, Ask for prayer, Get involved
