Story behind the song
I'd had never actually met my co-writer Roy Harris prior to this song. We were teamed together as part of a song competition with the idea being to complete a collaboration with someone whom you had never worked with before. Roy provided some great lyrics that I hope I did justice to.

What Matters Most Of All
Lyrics by Roy Harris
Music by Tom Wilson
I go to work and pay the bills
And mow the grass and such
But when it comes to showing love
I’m really not that much
I usually buy you flowers
On your special days
I thought that it might make up
For the words I don’t say
I told you that I’d love you
Until the end of time
I’ve joked that I might let you know
If I ever changed my mind
Sometimes I find it hard to say
What I’m feeling all the time
So I’ll try to do the best I can
And put it in these lines
(Chorus)
You’re the cream in my coffee
The sugar in my tea
If they split me down the middle
You’d be the better part of me
There are many things in life that matter
But still I can’t recall
Oh but having you beside me
Is what matters most of all
You’re the mother of our children
My lover and my friend
If they put us on a shelf
We'd make perfect bookends
When you look at the big picture
I know I’m pretty small
But in my world you are the one
That matters most of all
Repeat chorus
Instrumental break

There are many things in life that matter
But still I can’t recall
Oh but having you beside me
Is what matters most of all
