my frustration with mankind's reluctance to see the big picture -- not for the faint of heart. preface: wouldn't it be nice if, no matter who ends up running the world, we'd be happy having everyone's children grow up in it.

Story behind the song
as a former news junkie, i heard all these verse/references in a single night of radio/tv exposure, and a conversation behind my booth at a breakfast date. malthus and darwin and simple common sense should prepare us for an unpleasant demise if we don't reign in our appetites.
Lyrics
Time To Thin The Herd -- Jim Dyer
(but, what if we raised our children so that, no matter who ultimately
ruled the world, each of us would be satisfied to have them live in it?)
Those deer look so graceful as they bound across my field,
but they dine on my corn crop and they reduce the yield,
and night drivin's too dangerous 'cause they try to cross my road
and those eighteen-wheelers are hummin' and when they brake, they'll shift the load.
Looks like it's time to thin the herd.
Those nursery rhymes have scared us, but the wolf's howl does pierce the night
and I know he hunts my cattle and takes calves without a fight.
And they don't pay me much for predation -- but I deserve my dues --
I'll take money, or revenge, and the first I get will do.
Looks like it's time to thin the herd.
Those big, grey beasts take up a lot of room,
but their ivory makes good jewelry and their feet make baskets for the room.
We don't need 'em much for pullin'. We've got Jeeps to do the work.
And they eat our gardens, instead of gasoline, and when mistreated, go berserk.
Looks like it's time to thin the herd.
They're gonna get along without us. For generations, they've done just fine.
They've got maize and squash and buffalo to feed their kind.
We've told them that our promises will last as long as waters flow
but the buffalo keep 'em strong. They're gonna have to go.
Looks like it's time to thin the herd.
And Nature's in the shadows -- she's seen all of this before --
when there's too much of one thing, it'll eat up all it finds, and more.
We can try to be creative -- stave off starvation and disease --
but Nature's lust for variation is gonna be appeased.
There'll come a time -- she'll thin the herd.
